Sony readers re-appearing in Japanese and other markets at a price tag of $240
Japan’s largest electronics maker will again be selling e-readers in the domestic as well as other markets.
In 2007, Sony suspended selling its devices for reading e-books in Japan due to low demand. However, since December 10, 2010 electronic gadgets will reappear in Japanese stores as the popularity of e-books in Japan is gaining momentum. Also this year, Sony plans to start selling e-readers in China, Italy, Spain and Australia.
This year sales of Sony e-books have taken a toll in the U.S. market the release of iPad tablet from Apple, therefore the Japanese manufacturer had been forced twice to lower the price on its gadgets.
More than 20,000 titles in Japanese are expected to be offered by the company through its online bookstore. Sony is trying to tap the market which generally witnesses huge sales by the end of the year. In the Japanese market the e-reader will be priced at about 20,000 yen ($240) for 5 inch model and 25,000 yen ($290) for the model with 6 inch display.
The company expects to sell about 300,000 e-readers in the first year and if all goes well it hopes to tap 50% of the domestic market by 2012.
“I believe Japan has the potential to become the world’s second or third-largest market for e-readers, but there are some complex aspects to the market,” said Sony Electronics Senior Vice President Fujio Noguchi.
Recently Sony tied up with Asahi Shimbun newspaper, Toppan Printing Co and KDDI Corp for developing the e-book distribution to supply the editions for online bookstore.
