Paris Hilton Detained in South Africa; Marijuana Possession Charges dropped
Paris Hilton’s World Cup enjoyment in South Africa appears to have taken quite a knock, as police apparently escorted the Hilton heiress from the Netherlands vs Brazil quarterfinal game at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium located in Port Elizabeth on Friday, just before 8 p.m. local time. Later the charges against her were dropped.
Hilton's representative said another group member was being held responsible for drug possession, and police authorities, after questioning the hotel heiress, had dropped charges against Hilton.
Hilton and a photographer were taken to St Croix’s Mount Road Police Station, where she was supposedly detained and quizzed over smoking pot in the stadium.
However, after her photographer, Jennifer Rovero, pleaded guilty, the single charge against the Hilton heiress was dropped, police said. Rovero faces a fine.
Dawn Miller, Hilton's publicist, said that Hilton was charged for smoking marijuana and stated that no charges against Hilton will be framed.
The publicist further added that the unpleasant incident was a total misunderstanding, and actually it was another group member who did it.
Miller said that Hilton came to South Africa to watch the World Cup. She stated that the police authorities have apologized to Paris Hilton for wrongfully charging her as she was not involved in the incident.
Police are said to have approached the women after sniffing marijuana outside the tournament stadium where a game had been played. Paris Hilton and Jennifer Rovero were escorted into the Nelson Mandela stadium after tossing a marijuana cigarette on the floor.
The two were seen once more inside the Nelson Mandela stadium, and a second cigarette was handed over to police authorities by a bodyguard.
Paris Hilton looked calm when she was brought before a Port Elizabeth magistrate judge. Rovero is a freelance photographer, who works for Hilton.
