With the numbers of obese Americans continue to grow good news might be in the new future for those over weight. On Thursday, safety hurdles could be overcome with a new prescription weight loss pill, which would be the first one in more than a decade to reach this mark since the market has been plagued with diet drugs for years that do not work

Onexa, which is manufactured by Vivus Incorporates is looking for the support of the Food and Drug Administration to allow them to sell their drug to adults. The weight loss pill is to be taken once a day along with a healthy diet and regular exercise to help over weight individuals slim down.

The Food and Drug Administration will determine if Onexa, which is the first of three potential new diet drugs to be tested this year, meets the necessary benefits and requirements that individuals need to shed those pounds. They will also be sure that these benefits outweigh any safety concerns in which the drug might have on the individual's mental health, heart rate, or future fetuses.

Two-thirds of all Americans are currently either overweight or obese and there has not been any weight loss drug that has gained any leverage in the past. In fact, only a few have allowed individuals to trim off a few pounds, but even these carried too many serious side effects such as heart risk.

If Onexa is given the green light by the Food and Drug Administration, obese Americans will have yet another hope. It is also estimated that Vivus Incorporated could make at least $689 million by 2014 in sales. This would be the second drug for the bio-tech in the United States, which their last drug was an erectile dysfunction suppository approved fourteen years ago.
