Google may acquire discount coupons company Groupon for $6 billion

Internet giant Google is close to acquiring the online discount coupons company Groupon.

Google may soon conclude its acquisition of Internet service Groupon, which is engaged in providing various discounts, reports The New York Times. The deal could be anywhere from $ 5 to 6 billion, so it will be the largest one for Google and will allow it to become the largest online discounting service firm.

In early November, reports started circulating in media that Google might buy Groupon for $ 2 billion, the amount which was also offered by Yahoo, but Groupon rejected this proposal, considering the amount to be insufficient.

The deal is bound to extend Google’s dominance not only in online advertising, but also internet discount coupon business. This acquisition is aimed at fending off the competition by Facebook in this segment in which the social networking site recently launched its ‘Deals’ service offering discount schemes

Groupon became the first large-scale company offering 50 to 90% discounts to its users. However, the discounts are valid only if a certain number of people become interested in the products or services. Groupon project was launched in November 2008. Since then the company has evolved from a new player into multi billion dollar empire, which employs thousands of people around the world. In April this year Groupon received investment of 135 million dollars from Digital Sky Technologies, which increased its market value up to $ 1 billion.
